Volunteers Needed!
School Building Project: Lincoln School Committee and the Town Moderator Seek Volunteers for a Citizen Advisory Committee
The School Committee voted on May 16 to authorize the creation of a School Building Project Citizen Advisory Committee, and seeks volunteers to fill the following positions:
• Up to 4 community members with architecture and/or construction experience to be chosen by the School Committee
• Up to 4 at large members appointed by the Town Moderator
These members will serve alongside up to four (4) members of the School Committee and/or the former School Building Committee. Those interested in serving should submit a letter of interest by May 30, 2013 to Jennifer Glass at schoolcomm@lincnet.org and/or to Sarah Cannon Holden at sarahcannonholden@yahoo.com. The purpose of the Committee is as follows:
Citizen Advisory Committee: Subcommittee of the School Committee
In April the School Committee and Board of Selectmen authorized the submission of a new Statement of Interest (SOI) to the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA). This was the first step in seeking funding from the state to assist Lincoln in a renovation of the Lincoln School. As the Town waits to hear the outcome of the SOI process, we have an opportunity to engage with the community and consider possible approaches. Appointing an Advisory Committee is a way to develop concrete suggestions that the School Committee could then use to inform a new feasibility study.
Task: Based on the Statement of Interest and the prior work of the School Building Committee, propose 2-4 possible pathways for addressing the needs of the school. Describe the scope of each, and submit a report to the SC by October/November 2013.
• Note: There are no funds dedicated to this work. If Lincoln is invited back into the MSBA pipeline, detailed plans and cost estimates would be developed through the Feasibility Study process. If Lincoln is not invited into the pipeline, the School Committee could still choose to ask Lincoln residents to support the development of these and other options. Funding for plan development would be sought through Town Meeting.
Goal: Proposed pathways will be considered by the School Committee and a future School Building Committee as starting points for future design/project development.
Topics to Consider: In developing proposed pathways, the committee will seek input from relevant boards and host public forums to consider topics of value to the community such as:
• How will renovations support/improve education and position the school for the future?
• How can a renovated building support after-hours community use?
• How should a renovation address Lincoln’s green energy goals? (i.e. Do we want to consider a solar canopy such as LS is going to install?)
• What kinds of campus renovations are important for supporting both school and recreational use of the campus (fields/parking/roadways)?
Meetings: The Advisory Committee will schedule its own meetings which will meet in public venues in accordance with Open Meeting Law. The School Committee will announce the meetings and suggests that at least 1-2 meetings are held per month. The Advisory Committee will select its own Chair.
