Local Officials & New Employees

Massachusetts law imposes a variety of responsibilities on those of us in public service. Administration of certain public sector legal obligations emanates locally from the Town Clerk’s Office. Specifically, the Town Clerk’s Office is charged with:
  • administering the oath of office to newly elected officials and certain public employees;
  • recording the statutory or appointing authority’s charge to each of the town’s standing or ad hoc committees (fifty-six at the moment);
  • maintaining the historical record of the terms of service of all officials (approximately 250) elected and appointed to those positions;
  • receiving and recording of public official mid-term resignations;
  • informing public officials of their obligations under the Open Meeting, Conflict of Interest, and Campaign and Political Finance laws and;
  • implementing applicable workforce compliance with the above "ethics" laws.
