MBTA Commuter Fare Proposal
Currently Massachusetts taxpayers provide the MBTA with approximately $1.2 billion in support each year, but the MBTA will still have an operating deficit of $242 million. Fares make up approximately 30 percent of the MBTA's total revenue. The MBTA is proposing fare increases. The MBTA is seeking public comment on fare options which are proposed to take place on July 1, 2016.
Option 1: Will increase single-ride fares approximately 5% and further increase certain pass prices and will have a system wide average increase of 6.71%.
Option 2: Will increase single-ride fares approximately 10% and further increase certain pass prices and will have a system wide average increase of 9.77%.
